MRE Mercantile Men’s Clothier, a new men’s clothing and lifestyle destination in the heart of Eastport, opened its doors on May 30 at 318 Sixth Street in Annapolis.
Founded by Severna Park residents and husband-wife team Travis and Cara Loving, MRE Mercantile is designed to be more than a retail store. The couple describes it as a welcoming gathering place where men can “shop, style and socialize.”
“MRE Mercantile is a mash-up of American style and southern hospitality,” Cara said. “When people come in the door, we hope that they feel welcomed and excited and curious to get to know us and our brands.”
Cara brings extensive retail and brand-building experience to the venture, while Travis, a veteran and entrepreneur, shares the couple’s vision for building a store centered around connection, authenticity and community.
“We choose our products and brands very intentionally,” Cara said. “We want to curate brands that have heritage and history, that care about the craftsmanship of the garments - things that can last for a long time.”
The store’s name also carries a special local meaning. According to Travis, “MRE stands for the Maritime Republic of Eastport. The quirky vibe of the neighborhood and the community spirit inspired us to open here. We just love the location right when you come onto the peninsula.”
The Lovings say the store is rooted in the spirit of southern hospitality, inspired in part by Cara’s upbringing in Asheville, North Carolina, and the classic general stores she visited growing up.
Beyond apparel, MRE Mercantile hopes to become a gathering place and trusted community presence in Eastport. “We hope people understand it’s more than just selling goods,” Travis said. “It’s about the community experience.”
