The Severna Park Green Hornets 8U Green baseball team finished in second place during their first tournament ever, the Crofton Swing Away Tournament, from October 5-6 at fields around Anne Arundel County. After winning both of their Saturday games by mercy rule, 11-0 over the South River Seahawks 8U team and 12-0 over the District Diamondbacks 8U squad, the Green Hornets Green group earned the No. 1 seed going into Sunday's tournament.

After winning 13-1 over Rawlings 7U and 14-2 over the Severna Park 8U White team, the Green team lost to Rawlings 8U in the championship.

Severna Park’s 8U Green Hornets included Carter Carroll, Harrison Karsner, Jack Logue, Jacob Lewis, Jay Watson, John Bass, Kit O'Dell, Luke Obringer, Nathaniel Clause, Padraig Murray, Patrick Cassilly and Rhodes Metzger.

The leadoff man, Cassilly got a hit in every at-bat, collecting 13 hits across the two days. Metzger tied for most runs scored over the weekend with eight. Lewis led the team with eight RBIs and five doubles, and he was a defensive stalwart at shortstop. Carroll had four RBIs and played stellar defense at first base. Clause added eight hits and great defense as a pitcher and at third base.

Several other players contributed to the team’s strong play including Obringer (four hits and two RBIs), Logue (three hits and four RBIs), Bass (six hits, two RBIs and a triple),  Karsner (six hits, seven RBIs and a triple), Watson (three hits and four RBIs), O'Dell (seven hits, two RBIs and two great catches in the outfield) and Murray (five hits and one RBI).

Steve Metzger served as head coach and was aided by assistants Scott Clause, Ryan Logue and Mark O'Dell.

What makes our team special is their pure love for the game,” coach Metzger said. “These kids come out every day ready to play and they give it their all. Whether it's hitting, fielding or cheering each other on, they play together as a team, and they play hard. It's inspiring to see how much joy and effort they bring to every moment on the field.”
