Falcon Football Focused On Grinding Out Results

Early on, the Severna Park football team figured out this wasn’t going to be as high-scoring a team as 2025.

These Falcons will win games their own way, even if it means winning ugly.

That’s what they did in their first win of the season, a 10-3 decision over Northeast in a game that featured two penalty-aided field goals, a defensive touchdown, six punts, seven turnovers and three possessions lost on downs.

The decisive moment came on the first series of the third quarter, where Falcons defensive back Caden Guerra played center field on a deep pass and didn’t repeat his mistake from a week prior on his way to a 66-yard pick-six that was the final scoring in the game.

“We studied film all week and we knew they were running verts. It was third and deep so we were sitting back, and I just saw it,” Guerra said. “Against Severn (in the opener) I had an interception and I ran it back right when I had a hole left, and I wasn’t going to make the same mistake. We knew that it was going to be one of those types of games, and we needed playmakers to make plays.”

Guerra, Lincoln Fox, Brett Hudson and Stephen Agboli took turns anchoring the defense through big plays, stifling Northeast at almost every turn as they grinded out the victory.

It was a far cry from the 36-10 outing in the opener against Severn, in which the Admirals had their way offensively.

“We’ve just been bringing energy. Severn is not happening again — we’re full go every day, getting our bodies prepared. When you can take those hits in practice, you can take them in the game,” Fox said. “Against Severn, it was soft, and we promised ourselves that you’re never seeing that from Severna Park again.”

Though they couldn’t quite hold down Crofton the following week, falling 21-11 after leading at halftime, the recipe is clear. Tough defense and efficient, ball-control offense is the way forward.

That resolve was further tested in the Falcons’ 21-14 loss to Severn Run, which dropped them to 1-3 on the season. Again it was a defensive touchdown that gave Severna Park hope, this one a Charlie Cavanaugh pick-six just before halftime, but the Wolves returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to restore their lead and never looked back.

Down two scores in the fourth quarter, the Falcons tried to rally but simply ran out of time. Severna Park now hopes to bounce back with games against Meade, Arundel and North County, sandwiched around a tough home game against Old Mill.
