August began with a wonderful grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration for Kheloney Inc., a new play and learning center in Glen Burnie. Owned by pediatrician Miral Khalil, Kheloney means “toys” in Urdu and represents the fun and playfulness at the heart of its philosophy. Children can explore toys, books, music, languages and crafts in their own way, in their own time, and in a relaxed, sociable and safe environment. This was a multi-chamber event with the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.

Next was National Night Out (NNO), celebrated by millions of neighbors across the country. It is an opportunity to bring residents together with law enforcement and first responders in a festive atmosphere. Our NNO was held at Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company and engaged thousands of people of all ages with food, games, demos, tours and more. We were a proud sponsor and participant.

We held a multi-chamber/business connections breakfast at the beautiful Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum. Members from 10 organizations participated in this speed networking event to build contacts and grow their businesses. The Maritime Conference Center is a gorgeous venue offering hotel rooms, spacious conference facilities and an auditorium with the latest technology for presentations. Hallways are adorned with seven-foot models of seafaring vessels and centuries of Merchant Marine history.

Another ribbon-cutting celebration was held for Stretch.Bliss Wellness in Glen Burnie. Owner Gigi Burkhalter rang in one year of business success after undergoing an almost insurmountable battle with breast cancer during the pandemic. Gigi will be the keynote speaker at our October Successful Women in Business luncheon. Stay tuned for more details.

The Severna Park Voice was the sponsor of our TGIF cookout held at the chamber near the end of August. It was so much fun and well attended. We are always so grateful to the Voice for covering events and member stories, the great work on the Business and Community Guide, and for this column!

Trish May of Keller Williams Integrity sponsored a Junkluggers event where people could “e-cycle” their old computers, TVs, old printers and other tech items. Junkluggers will take items and recycle them properly, repurpose or donate - not take it to the landfill.

Bernward Mechanical and Construction Solutions has a new CEO and we participated in a meet and greet for Chris Taylor, who is taking over the reins. In addition, we celebrated founder Carl Neimeyer’s birthday and the company’s Small Business Administration award win for veteran-owned business. Carl also held a blood drive.
