During summer and winter, extreme temperatures may cause you to use more energy to keep your home comfortable — and your energy bill may show it. What can you do now to reduce your energy use and costs?

Before the cold weather hits, here are some things you can do ahead of time that could reduce your energy costs:

Maintain Your Heating System

Home heating is the highest energy user. Make sure your heating system is running efficiently by scheduling a service check.

Lower Your Water Heater Setting

Water heating accounts for about 18% of home energy consumption. Reduce hot water usage by installing faucet aerators and efficient flow showerheads and adjusting your hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, or the low setting.

Once winter is here, check out some of these ways to save:

Use The Sun

Open window curtains during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Close them at night to keep heat in.

Conserve With Lighting

Turn off unnecessary lights and use LEDs, which can save you about $80 in electricity costs over the lifetime of each bulb.

Adjust Your Thermostat

It's simple: set your thermostat to 68 degrees. For each degree you lower the thermostat, you can save up to 5% on heating costs.

Recycle Your Old Appliances

Insulate With Windows And Doors

Double-paned replacement windows, storm windows and storm doors create pockets of air between the inside and outside of your home and help reduce heat transfer.

Replace Air Filters Regularly

Clogged and dirty filters can significantly reduce efficiency in your heating and cooling system.

Seal Your Ductwork

Use mastic or metal-backed foil tape to seal holes, tears and gaps.
