The 3A boys lacrosse state championship game on May 19 had all the makings of a blockbuster.
It was Towson’s third straight attempt to knock Severna Park off the perch. The Generals were the higher seeded team, and they leaned into the villain arc Severna Park so publicly embraced in 2025.
Then the Falcons did what the Falcons do best: jump all over opponents from the opening faceoff and delete all drama from the equation. They scored early and often at Stevenson University, invoking lacrosse’s mercy rule on Towson in the third quarter en route to a 15-2 victory that pushed their championship streak to 10 and gave them 15 crowns in program history.
“Our defense looked great, our attack, everyone was pitching in,” said Severna Park coach Bob Zichelli. “The big thing was winning those face-offs early, and we dominated between the restraining lines.”
The face-offs set the tone for the entire night. Davis Bates seemingly couldn’t lose a draw, which allowed the Falcons to set up their offense and run through most of the playbook. That helped the Falcons get rolling early, unlike in the semifinals against top-seeded Sherwood, where they struggled for momentum until a dominant second half to pull away for the win.
“We knew we couldn’t come out slow like we did against Sherwood. We started that game so poorly, and the offense wasn’t clicking,” said Duke Sealey, who scored the opening goal less than two minutes in on the way to a hat trick. “But Davis was killing it right away tonight, and that gave us the juice to get going early.”
This wasn’t a team itching to let everyone know about it, but don’t mistake less bark for a gentler bite. This iteration of Falcons lacrosse didn’t exhibit as much bravado as in years past, but they turned out to be every bit as ruthless on the field.
Their 13-goal victory matched the largest margin in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) era (since 1990), and they came within minutes of posting the first MPSSAA championship game shutout. Towson’s goals both came in the game’s final five minutes, when the clock was rolling and the subs were flowing freely.
Asked how they sustained intensity and energy despite the one-sidedness of the title game, the Falcons hearkened back to a season-opening loss to Urbana, where they had a big lead late and squandered it before losing in overtime.
“Don’t let up, because you don’t know what’s going to happen, and we remembered that from the Urbana game when we were up and they came back,” said senior attackman Tyler Lawhorne, whose natural hat trick in the second quarter put the game out of reach. “We just wanted to leave no doubt, and the captains held us accountable.”
Lawhorne led all players with four goals, while Sealey had three. Dom Markovich, Ben Ruppert and Brady Daniels each added a pair, while there were also goals for Dash Havens and Will Mazcko.
Mazcko’s pole goal demonstrated that everything truly was breaking the Falcons’ way in the championship game. After Daniels and Brady Distler were denied in quick succession in front of goal, the ball kicked out high and about 20 yards from goal. With the longest stick on the field, Mazcko reached up to secure the ball and, in one fluid motion, pivoted and put a shot right on target past the unsuspecting goalie.
“I realized when I picked it up that the goalie was screened, and I just shot it across the pile and it went in,” Mazcko said.
It was a moment representative of a dominant night in all aspects for the Falcons, and a fitting way to send off their 24 seniors: Markovich, Daniels, Ruppert, Havens, Mazcko, Lawhorn, Bates, Sealey, Blake Howell, Hayden Fox, Joey Viskocil, Connor Rayburn, James Sullivan, Cole Cavanaugh, Ben Dryer, Renzo Angeles, Colin Whitacre, Dylan Tieff, Ben Kreis, Zach Simpkins, Jack Crutchley, Bodie Eisenberg, Landon Williams and Sean Burkhardt.
“We had a lot of tough games that didn’t go our way the whole time earlier in the season,” Mazcko said. “We learned from those and battled back so that when we got here, we could come here and dominate.”
