If being a physician assistant in emergency medicine at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital isn’t stressful enough, Kathi Burroughs played a key role in Broadneck High School’s girls softball season and is celebrating their Class 4A state championship victory, a title the team won on May 25 defeating Urbana High School 1-0 in extras innings.
“Watching every one of these girls is like watching my own daughter, so it is very stressful!” she shared.
Following her daughter Alex’s softball career has led Burroughs to roles she couldn’t imagine a decade ago. Always up for anything, Burroughs has settled into her current role as the Bruins softball team photographer, social media manager and school food pantry coordinator. She even plans her emergency room shifts around softball games and practices and never misses a chance to profile the team and players on social media.
“Kathi is the first person to ask, ‘How can I help and what do you need?’” said head coach Stephanie Millard. “Her dedication, creativity, and unwavering support help showcase our team both on and off the field, and we are beyond grateful for everything she does for the Broadneck High School softball program.”
Burroughs shared, “I’ve always helped out volunteering in youth sports and in Anne Arundel County Public Schools in any way I could. But I really love being around these amazing athletes.”
Her daughter Alex, a junior and the starting center fielder for the Bruins, joined the varsity softball team last year as a sophomore on a team with 12 seniors. With that many graduating players and their parent volunteers departing, Burroughs was able to jump into several crucial roles for the team this season.
“I was asked if I could take some pictures. Next thing I know I am the team photographer!” Burroughs said with a laugh. “Then someone said, ‘Can you put together some promotional flyers to advertise our games?’ and I became in charge of social media.”
Following direction from the school, this season the softball team asked spectators to bring donations to games for the Broadneck food pantry, and Burroughs served as pantry coordinator for the team as well.
Creating flyers, leaderboards and player profiles for social media has provided Burroughs a fun, creative outlet to get students and the community excited about the wild ride this year’s softball team has been on, and she loves profiling the girls so that the community can get to know them.
“It’s really fun to put something together on social media, know the work that I put into it, and then see it get shared,” said Burroughs, who also works the concession stand when not taking photos. “I think the girls like what I’m putting out on social media because they let me take their photos – even my own daughter!”
Broadneck softball looks to be a dominant powerhouse again in 2027 with only two graduating seniors this year, so expect to see Burroughs as close to the field as possible for at least another season.
“I’ve been with most of these girls since they were 8 and 9 years old, so I am not going anywhere yet,” Burroughs stated. “I just love being around them and watching them play. I’ll be back again next year!”
