If there’s an academic or athletic endeavor at Broadneck High School, there’s a good chance Wyatt Shaw is in the midst of it.
The Broadneck senior is a capable central defender for the boys soccer team, as well as a lockdown long-stick midfielder on the lacrosse squad.
He also owns a flawless 4.0 unweighted GPA (better than 4.5 weighted) and is committed to the admissions process at Harvard, where he plans to play collegiate lacrosse.
Shaw committed to the Crimson last September, shortly after the trigger date for the class of 2026 to receive direct recruiting contact from Division I colleges. As the Ivy League does not give athletic scholarships, the fit was even more important, but Shaw had a feeling as soon as he arrived on campus that this was home for his four collegiate years.
“September 1 (2024) rolled around and the messages started coming in. I started getting visits lined up, and I took two before Harvard. I know it sounds cliché, but when I visited, I just knew,” Shaw said. “Of course there’s the name, but it was also the coaches, and the community felt right.”
In addition to his studies, Shaw is involved in several groups at Broadneck, including National Honors Society, One Love, and Morgan’s Message. He’s also involved in the community and in ministry through his church.
In the classroom, Shaw has five AP classes this academic year, which will bring his total to 15 during his time at Broadneck. Outside of class, the sports field, and his other academic pursuits, Shaw calls himself naturally curious.
“I like to learn little things — like how to juggle three lacrosse balls, or how a certain thing works,” Shaw said. “At school, I’ll even just pop into a club once or twice to see what it’s about.”
At Harvard, he plans to study economics. His college career will be built on everything he’s learned at Broadneck, both inside and outside the classroom.
“It’s just such a great community, a place where academics are valued and there’s a chance to compete for state championships in most sports,” Shaw said. “You don’t get that in a lot of places. I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”'
