Question Of The Month: Shipley’s Choice Elementary School

Posted

Each month, the Severna Park Voice poses a question to a local fifth-grade class. This month, students from Ms. Gehring’s class at Shipley’s Choice Elementary School answered the question:

What is your favorite school subject and why?

My favorite school subject is writing because it gives me a chance to show people what I am thinking, and I can teach people lessons through my writing. I also really like writing because I can be really creative and tell people about my life.
Ava W.

My favorite subject is math because I like problem-solving and want to be a scientist or an engineer. Math also has my favorite teacher, Ms. Benefiel, who teaches it.
Blakely P.

My favorite school subject is math. When I used to play with my toys, I would play with numbers and add them up. I also want to be an engineer when I grow up, and math can help me with that. Math is fun and calm; it lets you take your time and focus.
Brennan J.

My favorite subject is writing because it gives me a chance to express my feelings and life experiences. For example, when my classmate read his essay to the class in third grade, I realized he also liked physical sports and then we became friends.
Carson B.

My favorite subject is math! I think it is my strength in school. We also have a really nice and funny teacher, Ms. Benefiel.
Charlie K.

My favorite subject is social studies/history because I get to learn from the mistakes of others to make the world a better place. We learn about the U.S. government, which I like because I have a grasp on why or what our politicians are doing. I also get to see history repeating itself, which I find interesting.
Charlie P.

My favorite subject is math because it is easy for me, and I love to cook and bake. Something that I love to do in math is problem-solving because in life you will have to problem solve.
Charlotte G.

My favorite subject is math! I love math because my teacher is nice and I am good at it. It is also fun to learn new strategies that will help me later on in my life. Sometimes my teacher, Ms. Benefiel, does fun stuff and even made her own rap, which was funny.
Chase V.

My favorite school subject is writing because I really like writing stories. My teacher, Ms. Gehring, also makes writing class very fun and enjoyable. You can have more thoughts and feelings in writing than speaking out loud. I want to be an author when I grow up, so writing helps me to practice.
Emily H.

My favorite subject is science because you get to do chemistry. I really like mixing different substances together to see what the solution comes out to be. I also like to watch the videos on new things that we haven’t learned so you can see them in real time and hear them from a different perspective.
Ethan M.

My favorite subject is math because in my opinion it is one of the most useful skills in life because you will have to calculate a lot of things. I love when I get to do math that is far above grade level because when it is difficult then you get to do things that make you feel accomplished.
Gabe K.

My favorite subject is math because you get to learn how you can use it in everyday life. It is fun because our teacher Ms. Benefiel is really nice to everyone, and also because we get to learn new strategies with decimals, fractions and volume.
J.T. S.

My favorite school subject is writing because I get to write down what I feel and all my adventures. I don’t just have to write in school. I can write anywhere, and it does not need to be perfect. I love writing stories and listening to stories my friends write.
Juliana M.

My favorite subject is science because I just love experimenting and watching videos on new things. One experiment we are doing now is seeing what liquids clean a penny or destroy a penny. It is super cool to see what has happened to the pennies over the weeks.
Katelyn W.

My favorite school subject is math because it is challenging and we get to do it in groups with our friends sometimes. It is also really fun. Sometimes we get to work on really hard problems in a group.
Liam H.

My favorite subject is math because it is at the end of the day, it is not that hard and it’s the only one that flies by fast.
Logan S.

My favorite subject is math because it is fun and I enjoy it. It is fun because sometimes you get a prize for getting the answer right, and I enjoy it because there are so many new things that I can learn. When I get to math class, I am happy that school is not over.
Maggie D.

My favorite school subject is math because you can use it in everyday scenarios. When I grow up, I will need to use different types of math for different things like money, baking and for shopping. My math teacher is super nice. She makes a lot of boring things fun and teaches us new strategies.
Mason W.

My favorite school subject is math because it can help me in life and it is fun. It can help me in life because whenever I buy something, I can add up the price. Also, if I need to cut up a cake for a certain amount of people I can.
McCaffery L.

Science and social studies, because I love learning about history, chemistry, nature and politics. I mostly enjoy science though and the reason is simple: I just love to learn new things!

My favorite school subject is math because it teaches me a lot of things I need to know in life, like you use math in baking. Math is really useful and I’m happy I’m learning it.

My favorite subject is writing because it is a way to express myself. For me it is easier to write my thoughts down because more people can understand what I am trying to say. My teacher, Ms. Gehring, is always trying to make us better writers so we can be proud of ourselves. I have set a goal for myself that is to write a book of my own.
Sophie C.

I love writing because I am able to express myself. I’m able to show my emotions and that can become really powerful. I am also able to write how I feel. I am excited to write my own answers and show people my personality and feelings with people through my writing.
