When the dust settled after the region wrestling tournaments, Broadneck and Severna Park combined to send nine entrants to the state meet in Upper Marlboro March 5-7, and history was made at the state meet.
Michael Queen, Severna Park’s standout wrestler who became a three-time county champion in February, secured a third straight top-three states finish when he placed third in the 4A/3A 126-pound bracket. Though he suffered his only loss of the season in the semifinal round, Queen rebounded to cement his place in Severna Park and Anne Arundel County history.
He finishes his decorated prep career with three county championships and 172 victories, six more than any other county wrestler before him. Queen also owns the single-season Severna Park record for wins, having gone 45-1 this season. His previous best was a co-record 43, a mark set during his freshman season and shared with current Falcons coach Sam Ziff.
Also for Severna Park, Jack Queen (106) reached the third consolation round before bowing out of the tournament, while teammates Brody Clark (132) and Andrew Bonk (144) each reached the second consolation round.
Broadneck’s Andrew Bevilacqua (126) and Jack Joseph (138) also qualified for the championship meet.
In the girls-only championship, Severna Park’s Madison Bullock dropped her first match in the 120-pound bracket but battled back to place fifth. Broadneck’s Jahzara Smith (105) and Severna Park’s Blair McDaniel (170) also emerged from regionals to make the state meet. Smith won her opening match at the tournament before going out in the second consolation round.
