NAMI Educates Community On Mental Illness

Posted

On April 17, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Anne Arundel County (NAMI AAC), held a community education event at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center’s Courtney Conference Center, with board certified psychiatrist and NAMI board member Dr. Bishoy Michael as the guest speaker.

Michael’s presentation consisted of an overview of the various types of mental illnesses including anxiety, depression, bipolar 1 and II, personality disorders, schizophrenia and others. He noted presenting symptoms for each symptom and professional guidelines and materials used to diagnose illnesses as well as medications that are commonly prescribed as part of a treatment and recovery plan that includes therapy with a mental health professional on an ongoing basis. After the presentation, time was allotted for questions and conversation with Michael.

NAMI AAC will host other community education events in May and beyond.
