Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) got special news in January. Kiss Me Blue, affectionately known as “Chrissy,” was named the 2025 United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Heart Horse Award winner, a national honor recognizing horses whose extraordinary service and partnership profoundly impact the lives of others.

Based in Crownsville, MTR serves residents all over the county. The nonprofit partners with horses to support the physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being of children and adults with diverse challenges.

The Heart Horse Award was presented on January 15 during the USEF Pegasus Awards Dinner at the USEF annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. Members of the MTR leadership team were in attendance, with the award accepted on behalf of the organization by Executive Director Kelly Rodgers and Mental Health Program Manager Katie Streett.

The USEF Heart Horse Award celebrates equine partners who exemplify kindness, patience and unwavering dedication through their work in equestrian sport and community outreach. These horses represent the very heart of equestrian service, making meaningful and lasting differences far beyond the arena.

Chrissy was selected for her exceptional commitment to serving individuals with physical, emotional, cognitive and mental health challenges through Maryland Therapeutic Riding’s diverse equine-assisted programs.

MTR is a member of the USEF community outreach program, a national initiative that supports organizations using equestrian activities to positively impact their communities. Through this program, USEF uplifts and recognizes organizations like MTR that expand access to the healing power of horses for individuals and families who may not otherwise have access.

For the past 17 years, Chrissy has been a cornerstone of Maryland Therapeutic Riding’s programs, quietly and consistently transforming lives. Known for her calm presence, steady movement, and intuitive ability to connect with participants, Chrissy has supported thousands of moments of growth, confidence and healing — from first rides and physical breakthroughs to powerful emotional connections formed during equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions.

“Chrissy represents everything we value in our equine partners,” Rodgers said. “She meets each participant exactly where they are, offering patience, trust and unconditional support. This national recognition honors not only Chrissy but all of our horses who make this profound work possible every day.”
