Falcon Girls Rally To Reach Region Final

Sitting at 2-9 at the midway point of the season, few would have held it against Severna Park had they written off the girls basketball season.

Instead, they ripped off an 11-2 run to navigate the Anne Arundel County gauntlet, ensure a winning season, and come within one game of making it back to the state playoffs. That run included a 45-33 win over Broadneck, a two-point loss to Annapolis, and a 39-31 win over Leonardtown.

Severna Park got to the 4A East 1 region final before seeing their season end with a 56-47 loss at perennial power Western of Baltimore City.

“That’s Severna Park basketball: two seasons,” said Severna Park coach Kristofer Dean. “These girls have really bought in and really looked good down the stretch.”

In the final, senior guard Maria Bragg netted 23 points as the Falcons raced out to an early 15-point lead. But foul trouble hounded Bragg and the Falcons in the second half, allowing Western to chip away at the lead and take it for good with three minutes to play.

Severna Park, which finished the season with a 13-12 record, will graduate eight seniors from the squad: Bragg, Rowan Laughon, Gabi Villegas, Ava Scott, Naomi Batty, Lizzy Thompson, Emerson Scott and Brooke Barnes.

Falcon Boys Finish 19-4

A promising season came to a sudden end as the Severna Park boys basketball team dropped successive games to end the season. They fell to Meade 63-48 in the county championship game, then lost at home to Mergenthaler Vo-Tech 54-53 in the 4A East 1 region semifinals.

The Falcons had an early lead against Meade but could not pull off their second win over the Mustangs on the season, and they fell behind early against Mervo and could not quite complete the comeback.

Severna Park closed the season with a 19-4 record and a regular-season county championship. The Falcons clinched that regular-season title by beating Meade (64-59), Broadneck (53-43), and South River (54-49) in succession in mid-February.

They’ll graduate five seniors from this season’s team: Lane August, Garrett Moden, Dash Havens, Ozzy Jones and Sam Matthews.

Broadneck Girls Ousted In Region Quarters

The Bruins won a coin toss with North Point for the right to host their 4A East 2 regional quarterfinal game, but the Eagles went back to Waldorf with a 40-38 win.

Broadneck trailed throughout, including facing an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game in the final minute. But a putback just before the buzzer gave North Point the victory and ended the Bruins’ season at 14-8.

Broadneck graduates just one senior from this year’s squad: dominant post presence Makayla Kropfelder.
