Junior Triathletes To Hit Trail For Memorial Race

There’s still time to sign up for the Karen Stevens Memorial Kids Triathlon, to be held October 7 at the Severna Park Community Center.

This race has been held annually since 2009 in memory of swim instructor Karen Stevens, who passed away following a battle with cancer.

“What made her a great instructor was her love for kids, specifically teaching kids with special needs,” said race coordinator David Ensor.

The triathlon pays tribute to Stevens’ love of children and movement as proceeds from the race are donated to the SEALS swim program at the community center, which offers adaptive swim lessons free of charge.

There are three racecourses depending on the participant’s age: 11-14 years old, 10 years and under, and the Junior Tri-it, which has welcomed athletes as young as 3 years old.

“It’s the cutest thing ever,” Ensor said of the junior race, which is held entirely on the grounds of the community center.

The older divisions will bike south on the B&A Trail and then run north. Spectators wishing to cheer on athletes can do so along the trail.

Registration ends October 5 at 11:55pm and can be found at kskidstri.wordpress.com. The Karen Stevens Memorial Kids Triathlon is sponsored by Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails in partnership with the Severna Park Community Center and SPY Swimming.
