Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus will return to 49 West in Annapolis on November 28 at 7:00pm to celebrate Patton’s 75th birthday as well as to support their new “Two True Loves” album, which has a No. 1 single, “I Want it All,” on the Roots Music Reports’ Texas music charts. The album has reached No. 3 on both the Texas music charts and the Roots Music Reports’ Americana chart.
The band on the album is Ron Flynt (bass, keyboards and producer), Scrappy Jud Newcomb (lead guitar), John Chipman (drums), and BettySoo (harmonies) as well as Patton and Brokus.
For the 49 West show, the band will include all Baltimore/Washington area players. Luke Chohany will be on guitar, Eric Leifert on bass, Tomy Wright on percussion, and Christina Van Norman on backup vocals.
Patton and Brokus have just returned from touring Scotland. They had four showcases at this year’s AmericanaFest in Nashville.
Patton’s songs are about plans gone wrong, long-term relationships, and growing up, at any age. He and Brokus have been recording since 1985 and met at the former Oxbow Inn in Arnold, Maryland.
A Severna Park High School graduate, Patton was the former head track and cross country coach at Severna Park High School where he won three state championships, one each in indoor track, spring track, and cross country. He is in the Severna Park High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a coach.
Brokus graduated from Archbishop Spalding, was named Annapolis’ Young Businesswoman of 1986, worked as a private psychological therapist, and was the director of the Annapolis Youth Services Bureau. Both Patton and Brokus had and have deep roots in the Severna Park/Anne Arundel County area.
As the main source of his lyrical inspiration, Patton cites 20th century American fiction (from Fitzgerald and Hemingway and Faulkner to Kerouac and Salinger and Raymond Chandler) and the various lives of the friends he grew up. “I knew doctors and lawyers and waitresses and teachers and water rats and gravediggers and the guy who drove the truck that emptied the port-o-pots all over the state,” he said.
Musically, Patton said he learned to play acoustic guitar through Bob Dylan songs, and electric in a band playing Rolling Stones songs, and "that was pretty much it for covers.”
Tickets are $15. For reservations, call 410-626-9796.
