Each year on the Fourth of July, we gather to celebrate the birth of our nation and the ideals of freedom, opportunity and self-determination that laid the foundation of the United States. For many people, Independence Day is a time of fireworks, parades and barbecues. But for me, it’s also a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we can go together.
As a Black woman who grew up in poverty, I have lived the complexities of the American experience. Yet through it all, one truth has remained: America is just as much my country as it is anyone else’s. I was raised to believe that with hard work, faith and determination, success is within reach. That belief didn’t come easily, but it was rooted in a hope that has carried me through every challenge.
Now, as a mother, I pass that same message to my children. I tell them that the American dream is not reserved for a select few. It belongs to all of us who are willing to strive, serve and uplift our communities. And as a member of this community, I carry that message to everyone I meet because representation matters, and so does belief in the promise of progress.
Independence Day is not just a celebration of our past. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come as a nation and renew our commitment to the work ahead. Yes, we still face real challenges. But we also stand on the shoulders of those who came before us — people who fought, built and sacrificed to make this country better for future generations.
This Fourth of July, as we flood the streets of Severna Park and wave our flags, let us also remember the deeper meaning of this day. Let it remind us of our shared values and our collective power to shape the future.
I look forward to celebrating with you and honoring the enduring spirit of America.
Happy Independence Day!
