Green Hornets Boys Basketball League Champions

Posted
The following Green Hornets boys basketball teams capped their seasons with championships.

Third- And Fourth Grade A Bracket Champions: Suns
Head Coach: Timmy Connolly
Assistant Coach: Mike Dabbs
Nail-biting wins and tough losses defined the Suns’ season. Point guards Charlie Deitz and Turner Mundorf set the pace for the Suns on offense, while Harrison Karsner and Toby Judkins secured countless rebounds and were critical to the team’s success down the stretch. Standout performances by Bennett Kanoff and Curtis Dabbs in the playoffs helped propel the Suns to the championship. Gritty defense and clutch plays by Jameson Tallon, Jake Stair, Ben Skube and TJ Connolly ensured the Suns pulled out close games throughout the year.
In the end, a team-first mindset and pure determination fueled a championship season for a great group of boys.

Third- And Fourth-Grade B Bracket Champions: Celtics
Head Coach: Meredith Carter
Assistant Coach: James Woody
A few tight losses did not stop the Celtics from keeping their eye on the prize. The team followed those losses by coming together and playing as a unit. “Yes, they were aggressive, passionate, but most importantly, they relied on each other to get it done, and I'm so proud of their accomplishment,” Carter said.

Fifth- And Sixth-Grade A Bracket Champions: Cavaliers
Head Coach: Jon Craft
Assistant Coaches: Michael Boosinger and Daniel D'Orlando
The Cavaliers finished the season on top, winning a championship after a competitive battle against the Pelicans, who played an excellent and hard-fought game. “The Cavaliers embraced a team-first mentality all year — sharing the ball, defending with purpose, and supporting one another every step of the way,” Craft said. “The coaches couldn’t be prouder of what these young athletes accomplished.”

Fifth- And Sixth-Grade B Bracket Champions: Bucks
Head Coach: Tim Berger
Assistant Coach: Ryan O'Donnell
The Bucks defeated the Magic 20-13 to win the B Division fifth- and sixth-grade championship. The Bucks improved as the year went on, thriving on high-effort defense and getting contributions from everyone on their roster. Ryan Berger and Grady O'Donnell showed off strong all-around games and veteran leadership. Connor Higdon was a key scorer and three-point threat. Thomas Peery and Sylas Savaliski provided athleticism on offense and smothering defense, as did William Chekan. Big men Mack Glynn and Elliott Dorn cleaned up on the boards and scored at opportune times. Liam Balonis and Everett Bailey contributed consistently, and they provided clutch buckets when it mattered, including in the championship game.

Seventh- And Eighth-Grade Champions: Celtics
Head Coach: Josh Cornett
Assistant Coach: Tony Stemwrick
For the Celtics, the championship was a byproduct of selfless play and a shared goal.
“I’ve coached a lot of teams over the years, but this group was special,” Cornett said. “This was by far the least stressful and most rewarding season I’ve ever had. These young men showed up, worked hard, trusted each other, and grew as players and as teammates.
“I also want to thank my assistant coach, Tony Stemwrick, who was basically the mastermind behind our schemes and lineups. He played a huge role in these young players’ success this year, and I’m grateful for everything he brought to the team.”
Cornett left his team with a parting thought. “I’m proud of every one of them,” he said. “What a season. What a group. What a finish.”

High School Scrub Champions: Nuggets
Head Coach: Stacey Bergstrom
The Nuggets topped a field of 30 to win the 2025-2026 scrub championship. They were led in scoring by senior Jacob Broadwater during the regular season, with junior Myles Goger taking over in the playoffs, scoring more than 20 points multiple times. Senior Jake Burns delivered clutch shooting and two dramatic buzzer-beaters, while seniors Reid Bergstrom and Matt Williams anchored a suffocating interior defense. Sophomore Griffin Bergstrom led the team in assists. Despite Broadwater spraining his ankle mid-run — and miraculously returning for the championship — the Nuggets survived undefeated throughout the playoffs, including a semifinal Burns buzzer-beater while playing three-on-five, due to injury and foul trouble. Additional contributors included Ben Morgan, Marcos Garganos and Peter Acosta.
While the Nuggets had some standout performances from individuals, it was grit, team chemistry, and unselfish play that led them to a championship over several talented opponents.
