Golf Tournament Will Raise Funds For Basketball Program In Under-Resourced Communities

Posted

Breakthrough Academy, a nonprofit founded by Severna Park High School graduates Hunter Roberts and Jeremy Carr, is gearing up for its next fundraiser at Compass Pointe Golf Courses in Pasadena on April 18.

Since fall 2024, Roberts and Carr have empowered youth through mentorship, using basketball as a tool for personal growth and leadership development. Their organization creates a safe and supportive after-school environment that promotes physical activity, skill development and positive engagement.

Through gym time and Saturday games, elementary and middle school students flourish as they get to be part of a nurturing and inclusive team environment. Administrators have cited improved attendance, behavior and school pride as benefits for players.

The activities began in the fall of 2024 at Belle Grove Elementary and the positive results prompted other schools to sign on with the program, now in its third season. The coaches recently established Breakthrough Academy as a nonprofit, allowing them to grow the program further, adding individualized coaching to their offerings.

The Breakthrough Academy golf tournament will raise money that will cover the cost of these programs for families. Money raised will go toward gym fees, uniforms, registration fees, equipment and transportation for students.

The tournament will feature a shotgun start, scramble tournament, meals and unlimited beverages, entertainment by a professional long driver, a par 5 competition and a silent auction.
