Falcons, Bruins Boys Soccer Teams Dreaming Big

Posted

With a combined three dozen returners providing a healthy combination of skill and experience, the boys soccer teams at Broadneck and Severna Park both have promising prospects for the 2025 season.

Each team remains in their region from the past two years — Severna Park in 3A East, Broadneck in 4A East — and each has one addition to the region. Old Mill joins the fray in Severna Park’s region, while Crofton shifts to Broadneck’s in the 4A ranks.

Otherwise, it will be a gauntlet of familiar foes as Broadneck looks for a return to the state playoffs, and the Falcons hope to get back to that round after missing out in the last two seasons.

An early litmus test comes for both programs, when they square off in the first week of the regular season. They’ll kick off at 5:00pm September 9 at Broadneck.

Severna Park

The Falcons are gearing up for another crack at returning to the state playoff rounds, where they haven’t been since reaching the 4A state final in 2022.

In each of the last two years, Severna Park has been ousted by South River in the region tournament. But with the Seahawks rebuilding and the Falcons returning 17 varsity players, experience gives Severna Park an early leg up.

Forward Aidan Min returns to spearhead the Falcons’ attack, while Charlie Samples is back to backstop the team in goal. In between, players who have grown into leadership positions — like midfielders Jacob Broadwater and Garrett Moden and defender Liam Kinslow — give the Falcons the “consistency, cohesion and confidence,” coach Ryan Parisi expects.

Severna Park opens the season September 5 at home to Cecil County’s North East High. They’ll also host Chesapeake and visit Broadneck and South River during the regular season.

Broadneck

Down the road in Cape St. Claire, Broadneck is looking to take another step forward in Sean Tettemer’s 24th season in charge. The Bruins won their first region title in six years in 2024 before bowing out to Montgomery Blair in a tight state quarterfinal contest — the second straight year in which they were eliminated by the eventual state champion.

They avenged the 2023 loss by ousting Leonardtown 1-0 on a T.J. Remson goal in officials’ time. And with Remson headlining 19 returners into the 2025 season, there’s optimism that this season could yet be even better.

Remson will anchor Broadneck’s midfield, while Brady Miller returns to provide presence in defense, and Wilson Banwell and Braeden Kelly lead the attack.

Out of a short list of around eight perennial 4A powers, three come out of the 4A East II region: Broadneck, Bowie and Leonardtown. They’re joined in 2025 by an ascendant Annapolis and region newcomer Crofton, alongside North Point, to form a loaded region that will leave the eventual winner truly battle-tested for a playoff run.

Broadneck opens the season September 6 with a pair of games in Bowie, against 2024 3A finalists River Hill and Mount Hebron. Later in the season, they have home games against South River, Chesapeake and Annapolis, as well as heading to Crofton to round out the regular season.
