The Severna Park baseball team had high ambitions heading into the 4A East I region semifinals. They were the top seed and facing a North County team they had run-ruled just days prior.
All that left the Knights with, though, was the knowledge they had nothing to lose and everything to gain. That paid dividends as they ambushed their way to a 7-6 victory in eight innings to stun their hosts and trip up the Falcons at the first playoff hurdle.
North County swung for the fences early and often, building a 4-1 lead after three innings. They pushed it to 6-3 in the sixth, before the Falcons rallied with RBI hits by Matt Zimmerman and Charlie Delobe. Reese Davis’ second home run of the day tied the game with one out in the bottom of seventh and forced extra innings, but North County’s Jacob Brune answered with his second homer of the day in the top of the eighth to provide the winning margin.
The Falcons finish their season with a 14-8 record, and they will say goodbye to 10 seniors from this season’s team: Davis, Zimmerman, Dylan Phillips, Logan Clarke, Evan Boucher, Brody O’Brien, Eric Benner, Teddy Uy, Brady Talbot and Kyle Witte.
Having netted the third seed in the 3A East II region playoffs, the Severna Park softball team blew out Old Mill 15-1 in the quarterfinals before bowing out 2-1 at Stephen Decatur in the semis.
In the win over Old Mill, Morgan Rausch had three hits, while Allie Moran and Lucy Benner each added two. In the circle, Quinlyn Bary and Abby Trust combined to strike out 10 and allow just one hit.
Against Decatur, the Falcons took a fifth-inning lead when Austyn Lundfelt singled in Jodi Deaton, but the Seahawks rallied with one in the sixth and one in the seventh, both runs scoring on errors.
The Falcons finish their season with a 14-6 record and will graduate four seniors from this year’s squad: Lundfelt, Taylor Moran, Kate Edwards and Norah Cornwall.
