In the aftermath of Severna Park’s 3-1 defeat by Leonardtown in the 4A field hockey state championship game on November 8, it was hard to tell by the Falcons’ demeanor that they had lost the game.
As disappointing as it is to get so close and come up short, the team arrived back at the state championship match perhaps a year off schedule, and for a large chunk of the game, it looked like they might just pull off the upset.
When Sophia Weber’s redirect went in to give Severna Park the lead, things appeared to be on for the Falcons to repeat as state champions despite graduating the entire rotation from 2024. But, as they did time after time this season, Leonardtown kept banging on the door and eventually it caved in.
Severna Park was only one of four teams to score on the Raiders all season.
“I’m just so proud of them,” said Severna Park coach Shannon Garden. “I can’t ask for more from a young group like that. I thought they came out phenomenally – they’re young, and they’re not experienced in this big kind of arena. I thought they played hard and they did everything they could. I could not be more proud of them.
“I hate losing more than anybody, but I’m so proud of them. They played so well; I don’t have any complaints. They gave everything we have to give.”
The Falcons returned to the state championship game courtesy of an overtime semifinal victory over Winston Churchill. Moments after seeing her penalty stroke saved in overtime, Weber bounced back and cashed in a rebound from a corner set piece to send Severna Park back to the final with a 2-1 win.
“I was just thinking that I needed to get it back because that was our chance to win. I made a mistake, so I had to get back and recover from it,” Weber said. “I needed to take the shot and see if it goes in, and if I don’t get it, one of my teammates will hit it in. I was just glad that I could help.”
Though the bulk of the team will return next year, the Falcons will say goodbye to two of their senior forwards: Kate Edwards and Megan Krause.
