With Broadneck graduating so many players from the past two seasons’ worth of tournament runs, the future might have been in question.
That future appears to be promising.
The Bruins racked up four straight wins to start the season, anchored by stellar pitching from Rylan Crisafulli and backstopped by an offense that picks it up when needed. They opened the season by topping Old Mill (7-2), Annapolis (8-0), Crofton (2-1) and Glen Burnie (10-0). That run ended with a 1-0 loss to Northern, putting them at 4-1 coming out of spring break.
In the Crofton game, Corinn Bennett laid down a bunt to score Dianna Owens in the eighth inning to snatch the victory and dramatically clinch a no-hitter for Crisafulli, who allowed three baserunners (a walk and two errors) and fanned 12 in eight hitless innings. In five games, the junior hurler has allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out 61 in 28 innings pitched. Keira Plumley and Izzy Barrass have combined to toss the other seven innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out 14.
The offense has come in fits and starts, but the Bruins’ recipe has had success so far: death by a thousand singles. Broadneck has just five extra-base hits to go with 30 singles.
Leading the charge at the plate have been a trio of batters: Bennett is batting .471 with two doubles, a triple, five runs, and four RBIs; Cayleigh Biermann is batting .462 with four runs and three RBIs; Maddie Madairy’s .571 average leads the team, to go with three runs and two RBI.
Broadneck has a busy week, with four games in five days. They play Huntingtown on April 6, North County the next day, and Southern the day after that. Lastly, it’s an early-season measuring stick game against perennial power Northeast on April 10.
