Former Broadneck girls lacrosse coach Katy Kelley thought she was going out on a high when the team won their fifth straight state championship in May 2025.
Turns out there was one more accolade in store.
On Tuesday, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced Kelley as the 2024-2025 national coach of the year for girls lacrosse. That was her final year in the Broadneck program, as she stepped down effective the end of the season.
In her 25-year stint on Broadneck’s staff, including 12 as the head coach, Kelley helped oversee all eight of the program’s state championships and nine of the 10 state final appearances. She was named Washington Post Coach of the Year in 2024 and the Chesapeake Chapter of US Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 2025.
In addition to serving on staff for a quarter-century, Kelley also has served as a staff liaison for the school’s chapter of the nonprofit Morgan’s Message, and as the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s 4A East Region’s lacrosse tournament director.
