Broadneck Girls Edge Severna Park In Wild Battle

Parts of Broadneck’s 46-38 win over Severna Park on Friday looked very much like December basketball. Other parts demonstrated both the hallmarks of the two schools’ athletic rivalry and the present quality on offer in both programs.

Momentum swings and clutch shooting were the themes in Friday’s contest between the longtime rivals. Despite letting a sizeable third-quarter lead slip away, the Bruins were able to rally from their own deficit and pull away late for the win.

When the Bruins broke open a four-point lead to 10 early in the third, it looked like the game was over. Severna Park had other ideas, though, denying Broadneck any points save for one lone 3-pointer. But in the final period, Ginger Kerdock hit two key shots to spur Broadneck’s decisive rally.

“We were just not as disciplined as we would have liked to have been, but we were able to keep our space and just keep them in front of us,” said Kerdock, who finished the game with 10 points. “I’ve been struggling shooting a lot, and this was the first time (in a while) I had some confidence, so it was really good to help.”

Samantha Miller led all scorers with 16 points for the Bruins, including two 3-pointers to help give Broadneck an outside threat. Severna Park was led by Ryn Feemster’s 13 points.

Feemster keyed a 17-3 Severna Park run in the second half that gave the Falcons a slender lead, but they didn’t hit another shot from the floor after Kerdock canned a 3-pointer to stem the tide. Broadneck outscored Severna Park 14-2 in the game’s final six minutes.

“I think we really started to execute and made good on it,” said Miller. “In our game last week, we panicked, and this week we worked on keeping ourselves calm, and we all trusted each other. Our energy was down a little bit, but once we got that up, we felt like we had it.”
