This time last year, the gap between region championships and state tournament appearances for the Broadneck baseball team was 30 years.
They weren’t keen to wait as long for the next one. The 2026 Bruins matched their immediate predecessors, winning county and region championships on the way back to the state playoffs.
Behind a four-RBI effort from Logan Sabo and a three-RBI performance from Bryce Watt, the Bruins topped Severn Run 10-4 to return to the state semifinals for the second straight year.
Broadneck sent all nine batters to the plate in the first inning and pushed across five runs, giving Jack Miteff plenty of support as he picked up the win.
“We know that one through nine we can hit,” Sabo said. “I could tell it was going to be a good day in my first at-bat, when I had a bad swing but remembered all the things my coaches told me, and the next swing, it clicked.”
Things came together for a Broadneck squad that had to reshape its pitching staff and the batting order, with just a handful of returning players boasting significant varsity experience. They parlayed that into another county championship, won 4-0 over Severna Park when they jumped on the Falcons in the first three innings and rode the strong pitching of Miteff and Tripp Zwerlein to finish the game.
“My goal was to just get through four innings no matter what,” said Miteff, who made it through five scoreless in the county championship. “When your guys start hitting one through nine, it lets you settle in and throw strikes.”
That early action wound up being Broadneck’s undoing in the state semifinals against Urbana, where the Bruins lost 5-0. The Hawks got all five runs in the first three innings, and Broadneck couldn’t figure out a way to consistently solve Urbana’s pitching.
Broadneck’s four losses on the season came to two teams: they lost to Crofton twice toward the beginning and the end of the regular season, while they also were beaten by Urbana during spring break and in the state semifinals. They avenged the Crofton losses by beating the Cardinals 3-2 in the region final to earn their fourth state tournament appearance in program history.
The Bruins, who finished with a 21-4 record, will graduate seniors Miteff, Sabo, Zwerlein, Aiden Casey, Bodhi Samson, Luke Smith, Jonah Lucas, Landon Gossard and Alex Barrett.
