AACPS Seeks Community Input On Cellphone Ban, AI Use

Posted

Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) Superintendent Mark Bedell is inviting community members to weigh in on two issues facing the school system: restrictions on student electronic devices and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).

AACPS is hosting a series of Community Connections sessions throughout October and November. The discussions will focus on the state-mandated ban on student use of electronic communication devices, including cellphones and smartwatches, during the school day beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, as well as appropriate student use of AI.

“These sessions have proven to be very valuable to me and to our team in prior years because they allow us to hear directly from members of our community,” Bedell said. “The two issues we will get feedback on this year are critical for us to address.”

Each session will begin with an overview from Bedell about AACPS successes and challenges. Attendees will then participate in facilitated small-group discussions designed to gather feedback and ideas.

Sessions will run from 6-8 p.m. at high schools throughout the county. Upcoming sessions include:

  • November 2: Glen Burnie High School
  • November 5: Northeast High School
  • November 10: Arundel High School
  • November 12: Southern High School
  • November 17: Annapolis High School
  • November 19: Meade High School

Interpreters will be available at all sessions. AACPS also plans to provide an online option for residents to submit feedback.

A video of Bedell’s remarks, along with information from the sessions, will be posted online after the sessions.
