Student-Athlete Of The Month: Giselle Muteteke

Muteteke Named To National Society Of High School Scholars

Everything seems to come naturally for Severna Park resident and high school student Giselle Muteteke.

Muteteke was accepted to the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) before the school year. She blends her academic achievements with participating in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and learning to play the piano.

The Chesapeake High School senior moved with her family to Severna Park in July 2022 from Egg Harbor, New Jersey. She wanted to be involved with her new school, so she tried out for the cross country team that fall.

“I wanted to meet new friends, so I thought I would try out for cross country and I liked it,” Muteteke said. “My time has really improved from last year to this year.”

Muteteke finished 12th at The Chase, an invitational at Arundel High School this fall. She also joined the indoor and outdoor track teams and accepted the challenge of throwing the discus and shot put. She qualified for regionals in shot put and finished fifth in the discus throw in April with a toss of 73 feet, which was a personal record.

Muteteke is a 4.0 GPA student and is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) calculus and language classes.

“She is a very dedicated student,” said her school counselor, Kacie Ciampoli. “She had applied to some top-notch schools, including the service academies.”

Muteteke has applied to West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy. She said she has also been accepted into Penn State and has applied to Virginia Tech, Maryland, Johns Hopkins and Princeton.

Her older sister, Colette, is currently a junior at West Point.

Muteteke would like to follow an educational path in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields, and her preferred schools are known for their excellence in those curricula.

She is also involved in church activities and volunteered for the Annapolis 10-Mile Run last August.

“Giselle also took a trip to Africa last summer and she told me it was a life-changing and eye-opening experience,” Ciampoli said.

Muteteke said, “My family and I went to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and it was the first time I’ve traveled outside the United States. The trip was very interesting and a cool experience.”

NSHSS recognizes outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. It was co-founded by the grand-nephew of Alfred Nobel. NSHSS is inspired by the mission of the Nobel Prize to support academic achievement and world betterment.

“Giselle is incredibly sweet and her dedication to her schoolwork will lead her to being successful in life,” Ciampoli said.
