The Mago Vista Mustangs boys 9U basketball team completed a 10-0 season to win the county championship in the Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks 9U C-3 division.

The team of Koa Hamilton, Conor Mastromarco, Noah Awa, Jack Gildea, Landon Noble, Luke Smith, Aiden Geissler, Paul White Jr. and Jacob Scanlon was led by head coach Paul White and assistant coach Sean O’Meara.

The Mustangs came from seven points down late in the final game of the season to defeat Cape St. Claire 32-27 at Germantown Elementary in Annapolis to seal the championship and an undefeated season.

Coach White said the team worked together and bonded as a group despite entering the season without knowing each other and with little collective basketball experience.

“We have a defense that we call ‘Badger,’” said White. “We were one of the smallest teams in the league, but the boys really embraced the aggressive style that this defense called for. Badger caused many turnovers that led to fast-break layups. The thing I am most proud of with this team is that when we would have a lead, the boys really wanted everyone on the team to have a chance to shine. We had three boys who never played basketball, and it became a goal of ours to make sure they had chances to score. They were great teammates to each other, and that’s not something you see often from 9- and 10-year-old boys.”
