Broadneck Sweeps Severna Park In Volleyball Clash

Thursday’s rivalry volleyball tilt between Broadneck and Severna Park started out tight, but the Bruins quickly and ruthlessly seized supremacy.

After a brief give-and-take in the opening set, Broadneck ripped off a 13-4 run to break away from Severna Park and never looked back, putting the Falcons away in straight sets, 25-13, 25-12, 25-12.

The teams shared the first 13 points of the match, with Broadneck up one, before the Bruins settled in and raced away.

“We’ve been working really hard on just, ‘Don’t let up,’ and handling our business,” said Broadneck outside hitter Brin Chesnut. “A lot of the girls (on both sides) know each other from club and are friends off the court, but when you’re at Broadneck, you want to beat Severna Park in everything.”

Chesnut led Broadneck with an 11-kill, 16-dig double-double, while Allie Chesnut also added 11 digs from the libero position. Precision passing made life easy for setter Sydney Lawrence, who dished out 28 assists.

“It felt really good tonight,” said Lawrence. “It’s great to know all of your hitters are ready to hit, and your passers are getting you every ball.”

To round out a near-complete performance, Broadneck served 14 aces, led by six from freshman Marley Evans.

“They served us off the court,” said Severna Park coach Tim Dunbar. “They played great, and we did a lot of things poorly tonight. When that happens, it gets ugly pretty fast.”

Perry Stevenson led Severna Park with seven kills and six digs, while Jennifer Hong had eight assists and Annabelle Mora also had six digs.

Next up for both teams is a road trip on Tuesday: Broadneck (8-1 overall, 4-1 in county play) is at Crofton, while Severna Park (5-4, 3-3 county) visits Old Mill.
