This morning, members of the county police and fire departments and county representatives gathered at the Anne Arundel County Police Department headquarters in Millersville for a 9/11 memorial ceremony. The men and women who perished in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were remembered. During the ceremony, the police, fire and other heroes who responded on this day 23 years ago were honored as well. The ceremony took place before the Anne Arundel County 9/11 memorial, erected in 2010 from two pieces of steel from Ground Zero.
On this solemn day of remembrance, County Police Chief Amal Awad encouraged all in attendance to honor a request from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum: “Remember the sky,” she said. “Sharing a picture of the sky wherever we are … to help ensure the next generation never forgets the lessons or the legacy of 9/11.”
She closed with a familiar quote: “The best way to honor the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11 is to be who we were on September 12, 2001.”
