The SPark U19 Blue field hockey team earned a pair of highly-regarded tournament titles this indoor season.

The team of Kendyl Underwood, Melanie Borneman, Isabelle Benoit, Libby Wild, Lila Slattery, Haley Davis, Eva Gormley, Hope Davis, Carson Smith, Zoe Day and Ruby DeFrees claimed victories at the both the esteemed Junior Premier Indoor League Tournament and the National Indoor Tournaments.

On February 16, SPark rallied from a deficit to win a back-and-forth game over Freedom HKY in the JPIL final in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Slattery scored a game-tying goal in the closing seconds to equalize the game at 5-5, and she scored four goals in the overtime shootout to lift SPark to the victory.

Underwood (Indian Creek), the team’s goalie, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Slattery (Severna Park) was the tournament’s top goal-scorer.

Over the weekend of February 21 and 22, the team traveled to Richmond, Virginia, to compete in the National Indoor Tournament at the Richmond Convention Center. The team went undefeated at the pool-play tournament, defeating teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Texas.

The team was coached by Shannon Garden (head coach at Severna Park High School) and Jesse Larson (head coach at Indian Creek). Garden said it’s the first time that a SPark team has won both the JPIL and the NIT in the same season.
