Severna Park High School Students Awarded Scholarships

Each year, the Anne Arundel County Council of PTAs (AACCPTA) presents the Kenneth Lawson Scholarship to a senior who plans to pursue a career related to education. This year’s recipient was Allison Omer from Severna Park High School.

Throughout her high school career, Omer has focused on early childhood education. For her first three years of high school, Omer took child development courses and worked in the lab school at Severna Park High. Omer credits these positive experiences and her child development educator for deciding to pursue early education as a career. Omer said of her influential teacher, “She got us excited about teaching, and she did a great job leading us through the [child development] courses. She has prepared me well.”

Currently, Omer is completing a year-long internship at Benfield Elementary School in Severna Park, which has served to further solidify her career choice. “I love being in the classroom and love seeing children excited about learning,” she said. Omer believes her experience in the classroom and passion for education contributed to her winning the Kenneth Lawson Scholarship.

Omer's future plans include majoring in early childhood education at Salisbury University, where she was accepted to the honors program. Upon college graduation, Omer’s goal is to teach in a classroom for a public school system in Maryland. While teaching, she also plans to pursue a master's degree in education. “I value my education and want to go above and beyond,” she shared.
