Region Champs: Broadneck Wins Tight Contest Against South River

Posted

In a matchup many fans envisioned when teams began practicing in November, Broadneck defeated South River 49-43 in the Class 4A boys basketball region championship Thursday night. The Bruins will travel to Gaithersburg for a state quarterfinal matchup Saturday at 2:00pm.

It was a defensive battle from the start, with both teams limiting the other’s scoring chances. The host Seahawks jumped out to a 17-11 lead early in the second quarter before Broadneck closed the half on a 8-2 run to head into the locker room tied 19-19.

After a tight third quarter that saw Broadneck leading 31-28 heading into the final stanza, the Bruins came out firing and led 40-32. Just as it looked like Broadneck was ready to pull away, South River put up a quick 8-0 run to tie the game at 40. However, the Bruins were able to respond and hit some big shots to regain the lead and keep South River from closing the gap. Junior standout Jordan Brown went 4-4 from the free throw line in the last minute to secure the win and set off a celebration by the visitors.
