Posted

How well do you know the principal at your neighborhood school? We’re surveying local principals to learn more about their hobbies, their best stories and some facts that might surprise you. This month, get to know Richard Tubman from Severn River Middle School.

How long have you been at Severn River Middle School?

Six years: two as an assistant principal and going on four as principal.

What is your favorite part of being a principal?

My favorite part of being a principal is working with our students and hiring great teachers to teach them.

Which school event do you look forward to the most each year?

The first day of school! After a long summer of planning, it is always great to get the students back in the building. The energy is contagious.

What’s something interesting most people don’t know about you?

I was inducted into Kent Island High School’s Hall of Fame in 2019. I coached three varsity sports (basketball, field hockey, lacrosse) over my tenure there as a coach. We won the state championship in 2008 in field hockey. The years I coached were some of the best years in my career.

If you could have dinner with one person from history, who would it be?

John Wooden. He was not only one of the most successful coaches of all time but his style of leadership through positivity was inspiring.

Which decade do you love the most and why?

Both of my boys were born in the early 2000s. I would have to go with that.

What is your favorite professional sports team?

Ravens, of course!

Do you cook? What is your favorite dish to prepare?

I love to cook! We do a shrimp and crab boil in the summer; when entertaining, that is fun to cook.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

Bungee-jumping in New Zealand and diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

What is your favorite movie, show or book? Why?

My favorite book is “Beyond Success.” It is an inside look at John Wooden’s philosophy of coaching. I used to read it before every season when I coached.

If you have a day with absolutely no plans, how do you spend it?

Offshore fishing on my boat … 60 miles offshore, no cellphones and no emails!
