Premier U11 Boys Score Comeback Win For Southampton Cup Championship

The Severna Park Green Hornets U11 Premier boys soccer team went 15-5-3 in the fall season, which culminated in a momentous win in the championship game of the Southampton Cup.

The Premier twice rallied from deficits in the final of the Southampton Cup, sponsored by the famous English Premier League club, to notch a 3-2 win over Soccer Association of Columbia on November 24 and claim the title with a 4-0 record at the competition.

A closing-minutes goal by Ben Montgomery off a cross by Christian D’Amico was the game-winner for the Green Hornets, who received equalizing scores from Carter Moden and Collin Denton to rally from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1. Goalkeeper Brody Feldmaier made critical saves throughout the second half, and Severna Park closed out the win to secure the championship.

The victory over SAC was impressive, as SAC had dominated its first three games of the tournament by a combined 16-3 score. Severna Park’s win also avenged a prior 4-1 loss to SAC by the Green Hornets and shuffled the state and national rankings calculated by gotsoccer.com, as the Green Hornets’ ascended to become the No. 4 ’09 team in the state and the No. 14 ’09 team in the country.

Severna Park’s win in the tournament final came after wins over two top-10 teams and another top-15 team, as the Green Hornets beat No. 8 Baltimore Union 2-1 and No. 6 BRAUSA 2-1 on the first day of the tournament and No. 15 FC USA by a 1-0 score on the Sunday of the tournament.

In addition to the Southampton win, Severna Park’s season included several notable successes. The team was champion of the Virginia Beach Columbus Day Tournament and semifinalists of the OBGC Capital Cup over Labor Day weekend. The Green Hornets went 1-1-1 at the Bethesda Premier Cup and finished in fourth place in the competitive Eastern Development Program ’08 Division I.

The team comprises Ben Montgomery, Christian D’Amico, Carter Moden, Collin Denton, Brody Feldmaier, Colin McDonald, Alvaro Dominguez-Calix, Liam Kinslow, Harrison Tindall, Caden Morris, Gavin Cliffe, Conner Hall, Cole Owen, Tyler Baker, Jonah Downey and Griffin Grotheer. They are coached by Andy Moden.

“This is an extraordinary group of talented boys that really love the game of soccer and enjoy being around each other,” said coach Moden. “With continued hard work and dedication, I am excited to see what they are capable of achieving.”
