Comptroller

It’s the time of year for giving thanks, and with the election now over, which we can all be thankful for, I want to express my deep and sincere gratitude to the voters of Anne Arundel County and all of Maryland for once again placing their trust in me to continue serving as your comptroller. It is an honor and a privilege to hold this office and I pledge to continue making sure your hard-earned tax dollars are being spent wisely.

I’ve always said there’s no such thing as a Democratic tax return or a Republican tax return, and my top priority is making sure my office respects the taxpayer, responds to the taxpayer and gets results for the taxpayer. After all, you pay my salary.

During my tenure as comptroller, I have been fortunate to travel across Maryland, visiting civic leaders, elected officials and business owners. These conversations have given me a firsthand perspective of the economic challenges and opportunities Marylanders face on a daily basis.

Maryland is home to some of the most innovative and prominent companies in the nation. They are small start-ups, independent retailers and large corporations; they are creating jobs, building strong communities and transforming lives. They are the lifeblood of our economy and they should be lauded for their contributions.

That’s why I’ve created the Cornerstone Award for Local Business Excellence. I’m looking to recognize and celebrate businesses that strengthen Maryland’s economy, generate jobs and tax revenue, develop innovative ideas that more effectively deliver services and products within the marketplace, and lead by example in their local community. One business will be selected from each of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City. Businesses of any size and sector are eligible for the award.

Nominations are being accepted through the end of December. Just fill out the form at www.marylandtaxes.gov (look for the link near the top of the page, over the lighthouse) and explain why the business is deserving of the Cornerstone Award. Nominations should be emailed to abrody@comp.state.md.us or faxed to 410-974-2045.

Speaking of great Maryland businesses, let me make one final plea to shop local as you check off your holiday gift wish list. I’ve had the opportunity to check out a number of great retailers from Cumberland to Leonardtown in the last few weeks. Shopping at these bookstores, clothing boutiques, chocolate manufacturers and gift shops keeps revenue in the state and supports jobs and investment in your community. And it’s just a good feeling to purchase something from a local business and experience real customer service, as opposed to keyboard shopping.

Thank you once again for your support at the ballot box. I wish you all a joyous holiday season and a prosperous new year.

Peter Franchot, comptroller
