Sigrid Kingsbury Helps Beautify Severna Park

By Maya Pottiger

Sigrid Kingsbury is very familiar with the gardens in Severna Park.

As part of both the Moonflower Garden Club and Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails, Kingsbury spends a lot of time outdoors beautifying Severna Park.

Kingsbury has been volunteering with the garden club for more than four years. She has served on several committees, but is currently chairperson for the committee that serves Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church.

As part of this committee, the garden club makes 65 flower arrangements to be delivered to Meals on Wheels recipients during Christmas.

“We try to make it as Christmas-y as we can because we don’t know if these people even have anyone in their house with them,” Kingsbury said.

In the spring, the garden club takes on its biggest project: Hatton Regester Green. The club cleans out debris, removes dead plants and replants where necessary. Club members are also responsible for maintaining a pond.

“It’s a great group of women,” Kingsbury said. “We have speakers every month. It’s all about gardening.”

In addition to volunteering with Moonflower Garden Club, Kingsbury is the treasurer for Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails. She has held the position for four years and was previously in charge of the Lasting Gifts program, which sells bricks and benches.

“We try to do as much as we can for the people,” Kingsbury said.

As treasurer, Kingsbury is responsible for keeping track of membership records, money coming in through Lasting Gifts, and all other money-making programs, like races.

“It’s nice to see the money come through,” Kingsbury said. “It’s something I can handle that doesn’t take too much time, but it does take a lot of time to be a treasurer.”

Previously, Kingsbury volunteered as the PTA president for Benfield Elementary and president of the Women’s Real Estate Council.

Kingsbury continuously reiterated the importance of giving back to the community.

“It helps people. It can make people smile,” Kingsbury said. “Those people who get those flower arrangements from us, it makes their day.”
