Letter To The Editor: High-Density Housing

Posted

The Anne Arundel County Council is putting politics before the health of our community! The areas in the world, the United States and right here in Maryland that have high-density living have been the hardest hit by the coronavirus. Unfortunately, there is still a lot we do not know about the virus. How long does it live in the air? How far can the virus travel? What is a safe distance from a high-density living area for our elderly to live and our children to attend school?

This council's priority is placing high-density housing (HDH), basically apartment buildings, in residential communities traditionally zoned for single-family homes. They have passed two bills already and another bill has been presented that would remove most restrictions and provide discounts to developers building high-density housing in the county. The council should not pass any bills related to zoning and development of HDH until we know exactly how it affects the health of the community. We should demand our council put the health of our grandparents and children before politics and postpone all zoning changes and development concerning HDH in Anne Arundel County.

On May 11, the council will have a virtual meeting. Please contact members of the council and ask them to vote no on Bill 12-20, the latest bill introduced to relax the requirements on high-density housing in our community. Health before politics!

Thank you, Chris, for advocating for our community's children and teachers! It makes no sense to pass Bill 12-20 in the midst of a pandemic. I saw a list of Councilmembers' email addresses on a social media post and am pasting it in here for anyone who might want to contact them about this.
