It's Not That Easy, Because I Like You A Lot

With Valentine’s Day upon us, love is in the air. We asked readers to share their stories of how they met their significant other – whether it was love at first sight, sweet and romantic, or embarrassing and funny. The winning couple is Linda Peters and Steve O'Connor. The couple earned a $50 gift card to Garry’s Grill and a bouquet of one dozen cake pop roses from LS Cake Pops. Their entry was written by Linda Peters.

Steve and I were introduced by our mutual friends Bill and Diane in October 2013. We hit it off right from the start and began dating. On our second date, we went to a pub and we were talking, laughing and having a good time. I remember the waitress telling us how refreshing it was to see two people having such a good time. We saw each other about once a week at the beginning, and then gradually, we started seeing each other more often. We always had a good time together, no matter what we were doing.

We had been dating for six months when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2014. Steve was with me when I received the news, which was a shock to both of us. I told Steve that I knew he did not sign up for this, so if he did not want to be involved, tell me then instead of waiting until I had started my treatment plan. Steve said, “It's not that easy, because I like you a lot.” He said that he was not going anywhere and neither was I. He was going to take care of me, and we would get through this together.

Steve was true to his word. He asked me to live with him so that it would be easier for him to take care of me, and I agreed. He went to every doctor appointment with me; he sat through every chemotherapy session with me and held my hand throughout each session. On days that I was not feeling well or had fatigue so bad that I could not get out of bed, he took care of anything that needed to be done. He was there when I had my surgery and took care of me while I was recovering. It was a long haul, but he hung in there with me as my treatment plan ended in December 2014.

Then in January 2015, we had an opportunity to go to Florida. One evening, we were outside in the hot tub, having cocktails and watching the sunset, when he told me that he had been thinking a lot about our relationship and wanted me to know that he was in love with me. I told him that I loved him too. It was very romantic. Steve is my knight in shining armor and will always be my special Valentine as we continue to build our lives together.
