Indoor Pools Provide Important Aquatic Rehabilitation

So, what is aquatic rehabilitation? Aquatic rehabilitation uses properties of water such as buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and viscosity to reduce stress on joints, increase strength, improve balance and assist in regaining independence.

In the water, buoyancy reduces the force of gravity, allowing individuals to perform activities that they could not tolerate on land. Hydrostatic pressure is the inward force the body experiences from the water surrounding it. This inward force causes increased circulation, which allows the body to better perform exercises.

Also, you naturally experience resistance while moving in water because of its viscosity. Viscosity is the resistance felt from the water when moving. This resistance allows the body to increase in strength without the use of weights. Combined, these pool properties give aquatic rehabilitation its ability to help countless people improve their quality of life.

Aquatic rehabilitation can help with many diagnoses, including back pain, joint replacements, fibromyalgia, stroke, sports injury, and deconditioning. The water allows people experiencing these conditions to gain strength, while also being in a non-weight-bearing atmosphere.

Although the water is helpful, there are some conditions that aquatic therapy may not be a good fit. Please be sure to consult your physicians before engaging in any new exercise regime.
