Greene Turtle's Tips For Tots Dec. 11, Multiple Locations

Posted

It's the season of giving, and the Greene Turtle is doing their part by purchasing toys for local Toys for Tots drives to benefit children who otherwise wouldn't get gifts.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, servers and bartenders at multiple locations of the Greene Turtle throughout Maryland, Delaware and Virginia will pool their tips to purchase toys for local Toys for Tots drives.

"Tips for Tots," as the annual event is known, began in 2006 at the Greene Turtle in Salisbury, MD, when bartender Corlie Brice came up with the idea after arriving for her shift and noticing that a neighboring business had been designated as a Toys for Tots drop-off site. She and another bartender ended up collecting $700 for toy purchases that night. Since that inaugural effort, the Greene Turtle has donated more than $28,000 in purchased toys to local Toys for Tots programs through the tips donated by restaurant employees, the corporate offices and additional gifts donated by other members of the community. Guests have rallied to the cause, occasionally giving tips as large as $50 to $100 on the purchase of a single beer!

The staff makes shopping with the donated funds a team effort - armed with trucks, vans and holiday spirit, they visit a host of area retailers that have largely agreed to offer discounts. There was no way for Ms. Brice to know on that day in 2006 how many thousands of lives she would affect over the years from her seemingly small, kind gesture.

Employees of the following locations have agreed to donate all the tips they receive Dec. 11:

Maryland: Annapolis, Baltimore (at McHenry Row), Columbia, Edgewater, Fells Point, Gambrills (Waugh Chapel), Hanover, La Plata, Mt. Airy, Olney, Pasadena, Prince Frederick, Salisbury, Towson  and Westminster

Delaware: Lewes

Virginia: Fredericksburg, Hampton and Leesburg

The Greene Turtle corporate offices will add $500 to the donations for each restaurant that raises a minimum of $1,000 in tips that day.
