Good Fences Make 20 Years Of Good Business For Fence And Deck Connection

In an industry that can easily be affected by today’s economic times, there is a homegrown success story that has been rooted within our community for 20 years. Fence and Deck Connection, located in Millersville, originated from a desire to break into the commercial fencing market back in 1991. After landing a very large state highway contract within the first six months along the route 50 corridor, their success story began. This 20-year journey humbles the owners, Jim Rubush and Ben Wolod, as their growth and success has far exceeded their expectations. Fence and Deck Connection has grown to become one of Maryland’s largest providers of fencing and decking, servicing both the residential and commercial markets. Becoming the industry leader in both customer service and satisfaction has always remained the company’s top priority. The owners have found their strong core values and focus on quality continues to drive the growth and development of their company.

In talking with Jim and Ben, their story, philosophy on business, and impeccable focus on customer service puts them in a league of their own. Standing firm on their commitment of operating with nothing less than the highest of standards, their track record of having zero registered complaints to the Better Business Bureau or the Maryland Home Improvement Commission is a testament to the principles upon which their business is built. Having a solid foundation of satisfied customers is what has kept them growing even in these difficult economic times. “Over the past few years we have seen major competitors go out of business while there seems to be more start- up companies in the market than ever. Our track record and experience is what really has carried us through,” says Jim.

As lifetime residents of Anne Arundel County, Jim and Ben purchased an old abandoned gas station located on Veteran’s Highway in Millersville back in 1999. This location gave the company the visible road frontage needed to jumpstart their residential division, thus providing the ability to diversify into decking, screened porches and sunrooms. Through the use of top quality products, project managers, expert designers and in-house installation crews, this division has become extremely successful for the company.

While continuing to stay focused on what they know best, it was very important for Jim and Ben to recognize a new, growing demand for hardscapes. As the popularity of outdoor living spaces have increased, demands from previous satisfied customers have also. Fence and Deck Connection is very excited with the addition of their new hardscape division to the company. “The goal of this new division is to provide consumers with hardscape options including paver patios, fire pits, retaining walls and even full outdoor kitchens. These projects will carry the same quality, service and professionalism that our customers have come to expect from us,” Rubush says.

For as humbling as their success has been, Jim and Ben have not lost sight of their respective place within the community. “We take the time to give back and appreciate our community for all of their support over the past 20 years,” says Ben Wolod. As a result, Fence and Deck Connection is continually supportive of numerous charitable events throughout the community, which include a corporate sponsorship for Habitat For Humanity in Maryland, annual toy drives for Sarah’s House, youth league sport sponsorships and field revitalizations, and local church donations to name a few.

Despite the economic down turn, it is nice to recognize a true success story right in our own backyard. These local men have truly set the bar for what the principles of success should embody. Congratulations to Jim and Ben on twenty years of success!
