Game, Set, Match: Juniors Compete For A Good Cause During Tennis Thanks The Troops

Posted

Youth athletes participated in the first Tennis Thanks the Troops fundraiser at Chartwell Golf and Country Club on June 1, just after the end of Military Appreciation Month. A member of Chartwell Golf & Country Club, Adrian Preston, wanted to start a junior tournament in the Severna Park area, and she partnered with the club to make it a reality.

The fundraiser benefitted ThanksUSA, an organization that provides academic scholarships for military spouses and children of all military branches. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) works with ThanksUSA to host Tennis Thanks the Troops fundraisers all over the nation. The Severna Park event was a junior tournament sanctioned by the USTA.

Sponsors included Safeway, Giant Food, Harris Teeter, Mission BBQ, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Modell's Sporting Goods. Chartwell Young Leaders provided volunteers and also goody bags for players.  Coach Robert Nuscher was also vital in organizing the tournament and mentoring many of the young tennis players.
