Broadneck Girls Dispatch Sherwood 17-7 To Advance To State Finals

Posted

When Sherwood scored less than four minutes into the state semifinals, it looked like Broadneck would have a close and competitive game Friday night. But it took only 21 seconds for the Bruins to tie the score, and from there, they went on an 11-1 run to end the first half to put the game out of reach. With the 17-7 win, they advanced to the Class 4A state championship for the second consecutive year and will look to defend their title.

Lexi Dupcak had a hat trick in the first half and led the Bruins with four goals while Lilly Kelley added a hat trick of her own. Meanwhile, Sherwood’s offense was carried by Emma Walsh’s five goals, three of which came in the second half when the game was well out of reach.

With the team just one win away from a state title, it’s become important for the players to stay focused, and that task begins with head coach Katy Kelley.

“We just have to present it as it’s just another practice, it’s just another game and we have to get the job done,” coach Kelley said. “You got to let them be a little loose and then you got to dial them in at the right time.”

The Lady Bruins will play in the state finals at Loyola University, though the exact day and time hasn’t been determined yet as other state semifinals need to be played. All state championship games will be played next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Check www.mpssaa.org for updated dates and times.
