Broadneck Boys Upend Severna Park, 56-28

The Broadneck boys basketball team took the first rivalry matchup of the winter by beating Severna Park 56-28 on December 13.

Logan Vican led all scorers with 17 points to go with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks, teammate Tromaine Jones had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and the Bruins brought overpowering defensive efficiency to deaden a hyped Friday-night atmosphere in their rivals’ home gym.

“We’ve attempted to hang our hat on the defensive end and make rebounding a point of emphasis,” said Bruins coach John Williams. “Those two things along with playing inside-out and getting our bigs the touches they need is rally our style of play this year.”

The defense and rebounding emphasis was made clear from the jump as Broadneck allowed only three Severna Park points in the first quarter and leapt out to a 13-3 lead.

Broadneck allowed only six points in the second quarter and nine in the third as they pushed out to a comfortable lead.

Vican, a senior who was instrumental in leading Broadneck to the state final last season, appears to have taken a big step forward this season. His size and strength created matchup problems for Severna Park as he operated offensively with mid-range jumpers from the elbow and drives to the hoop. On the defensive end, he protected the rim with two blocks in the first quarter and cleaned the glass to end defensive possessions.

“It’s really been great to see the progress he’s made in four years,” said Williams of Vican. “He’s done a lot of work in the weight room. He got banged up last night at St. Mary’s and he bounced back today. He’s been a true leader for us. We’re excited about his senior year and what he’s going to bring to the table. He’s a very versatile player, so he’s able to play on the post and on the perimeter, so he’s a tough guy to guard, and he’s really started to own his role this year, which is to be that guy. He’s very vocal, he’s demanding the ball, and that’s exciting for us to see.”

Josh Ehrlich scored 8 points for the Bruins, while Brendan Kennedy, Andrew Rose and Cyrus Jackson all chipped in with 5. Mason Stillwell hit a third-quarter 3-pointer and added 4 blocked shots.

The Bruins got their second win in two days after winning over St. Mary’s on Thursday. Broadneck is 2-2 through four games.

Severna Park suffererd its first loss of the season after starting 2-0 with wins over South River and Patapsco.

“Broadneck did a fantastic job defensively,” said Severna Park coach Paul Pellicani, who praised the community’s spirited attendance at the game but said the Falcons have to work on staying poised amidst electric Friday-night atmospheres. “It’s not always a blessing to play at home. I think our kids get a little overwhelmed by our own stage. We had a great crowd tonight. We have a bunch of guys in new roles, different roles than they were in the past.”

There have been positives for the Falcons. Jacob Goodman scored 22 points in the team’s 62-48 win over Patapsco, and Goodman had 25 points in a 62-58 win over South River to open the season. Orion Young scored 10 in both those contests; Joe Harrington had 13 against Patapsco and 9 against South River; and Jack Leverty, Ty Dulin, Eric Bloom, Anders Hansen and Declan Fox have all made impacts with scoring and playmaking. Fox, a sophomore, led the Falcons with 9 points against the Bruins.

“We rebounded the ball really well in the first two [wins] and moved the ball really well in the first two, and we communicated,” said Pellicani.

The Falcons are hosting the Winter Jam tournament on December 27 and 28 again this season. The tournament has been a huge success in its first two years and will bring eight schools for 16 total games between JV and varsity across the two days. Play begins with JV games from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 on both days, and varsity games run from 12:45 to 9:30. Old Mill, Indian Creek, Annapolis Area Christian School, South River, Mount Carmel, Perry Hall, Wilde Lake, Kennedy, Cristo Rey and Archbishop Carroll will all play in the Winter Jam.
