AACC Dance Company To Perform “Old Soles, New Shoes”

The Anne Arundel Community College Dance Company has been hard at work this semester with brave choreography and a new director.

“Old Soles, New Shoes” will debut at the Robert E. Kauffman Theater on December 6 at 8:00pm and December 7 at 2:00pm and 8:00pm.

While Lynda Fitzgerald, dance company director, is on sabbatical, Rachael Scaringe, former company member from 2010 to 2015, stepped in. The title of the show is reflective of this change.

“Once you join dance company, you feel that sense of family. It's such a family-oriented sense of ‘souls,’” said Scaringe. “And Lynda is on sabbatical, so the company is in new shoes this year.”

Students were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and work on their technique with this show. The company, made up of 10 students and three apprentices, was up for the challenge.

“Corruption,” choreographed by Scaringe, is a modern piece challenging people to break free from the influence of others. Scaringe also choreographed “The Jive,” which is a more upbeat jazz piece with 1940s flair.

Guest choreographer Anwar Thomas challenged the company with an African piece that mixes the styles of traditional jazz and African movement.

This year, students were given the opportunity to choreograph their own pieces. This challenged the students to push their peers, but it also gave them teaching experience.

The show’s 12 pieces include a variety of tap, contemporary, musical theater and modern dances.

Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 AACC faculty, staff, seniors, groups, outside students, and children under 10; and $7 for AACC students with ID.
