16U Spartans Reach Tourney Final, Prep For Playoffs

The Severna Park Spartans brought home a second-place trophy this past weekend in the Sixth Annual Firecracker Spectacular in Salisbury, Maryland, hosted by Fruitland Baseball.

Under scorching heat, the 16U Spartans cruised through two pool-play games on Saturday, July 6, scoring a total of 19 runs and only giving up one run to earn the top seed going into the championship rounds on Sunday. After a come-from-behind, 9-5 win in the quarterfinal round and an easy 9-1 win in the semi-finals, the Spartans were blanked 0-8 by an outstanding MVP Royals North 2021 team out of Northern Virginia in the championship.

“Our kids played well. They fought through the heat, nagging injuries, and were willing to play multiple positions, as we tried to maneuver through the games,” said head coach Dave Ferris. “Five games in two days with just 13 guys is always hard, especially with the intense heat. Special thanks to our catchers and all the pitchers who battled the heat and weariness.”

This was the third year the Spartans participated in the Fruitland tournament. They were champions in 2017.

The team, many of whom played for this year's Severna Park JV baseball team, is coached by Ferris, SPHS junior varsity baseball head coach; Joe Zimmerman, Archbishop Spalding junior varsity baseball head coach; and Jim Christy, Archbishop Spalding junior varsity baseball assistant coach.

The Spartans begin postseason play in the Anne Arundel Amateur Baseball Association on July 9, with the championship round set for July 15.
