The Green Hornets Warriors girls basketball team coached by Mike Davis overcame its season-long rival by defeating Brandon Goodman’s Green Hornets in the championship game of the seventh/eighth-grade club league at Severn School on February 24.

The team of Lola Blumenberg, Alyssa Chung, Ellie Davis, Savannah Drummond, Portia Flaherty, Emily Lamoreaux, Ellery Martin, Aislynn O’Keefe, Mikayla Rosario, Holly Wall and Courtney Youngwood, coached by Davis and Woody Chung, defeated Goodman’s squad 25-15 in the final to finish the season as league champions with a 13-3 record.

All three of the Warriors’ losses came against Goodman’s Hornets, so the championship game was a long-awaited ascent to the top of the league for Davis’ group.

“When I think of these girls, the term I keep coming back to is ‘team,’” said Davis. “Every girl did what we asked of them week in and week out, and if someone had a rough play or game, the other girls would pick her up.”

Forwards Wall, Rosario, O’Keefe and Drummond drew praise from the coaches for their rebounding, scoring and defense. Point guards Blumenberg and Lamoreaux stood out with exceptional ball-handling, passing and knack for steals. Off-ball guards Davis, Chung, Youngwood, Flaherty and Martin were known for their fiery defense and scoring ability.

Coach Davis cited the growth in each individual player’s ability as everyone improved significantly throughout the season. He noted the balance the team showed in sharing the scoring spotlight.

“I did not keep statistics on the girls, but I know that game to game the scoring was spread around,” said Davis. “On the year, every girl scored, and every girl got in the score sheet with rebounds and steals … In the first practice, we told the girls that we were going to be a team that plays defense, rebounds well, shares the ball and gets up and down the floor. From jumpstreet they bought in, and every game they hustled and played with high energy.”
