Happy holidays from the Office of the Sheriff of Anne Arundel County! It is truly my pleasure to be your newly elected sheriff and the 120th sheriff in the history of the county.

The Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office dates back to 1650 and plays several important roles in the law enforcement community. Its responsibilities include service of warrants, courthouse security at the Circuit Court, service of civil court documents, and domestic violence court orders, to name a few. In the few weeks I have had to learn and understand the knowledge and capabilities of the employees in the Sheriff’s Office, you can rest assured that they are a talented group of people who carry out their duties proudly on behalf of the citizens of our county.

As for me, I retired as a lieutenant from the Anne Arundel County Police Department on November 30 so I could be sworn in on December 3. I bring 26 years of law enforcement experience to the Sheriff’s Office, and I am excited for the challenges and leadership opportunities that lay ahead.

My staff and I have gotten immediately to work to identify needs and set priorities for the office. There is much to be done with budget and administrative procedures, personnel and staffing demands, improvements in technology, security enhancements, warrant reduction, community outreach, and the delivery of services.

I plan to bring a fresh approach and new ideas to the Sheriff’s Office and look forward to working with the new county administration to keep our communities safe.

I hope the holiday season so far has been a safe one for all, and I would like to remind everyone about good holiday safety practices. During this busy shopping time, always be cognizant of your surroundings, keeping packages and valuables with you while in stores. Keep your vehicle locked and parked in well-lit areas when possible. Try to keep items out of sight or in the trunk of your vehicle. Practice good home safety inside and out. Start by replacing batteries in smoke detectors, and make a plan to have someone retrieve delivered packages from outside the home to deter theft.

Exciting times are on the horizon for the Sheriff’s Office and I look forward to serving the citizens of Anne Arundel County as sheriff.
