SPMS Students Honored For Work With Wreaths Across America

A team of eighth-grade students at Severna Park Middle School was honored on January 3 for its service advisory project with Wreaths Across America. On November 16, the team of 135 students held a walk-a-thon to raise money to place remembrance wreaths in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.

In all, the students raised $5,000, which was used to purchase roughly 500 of the 13,212 wreaths placed on Wreaths Across America Day, a nationally recognized observance on December 15.

The cemetery hosts 18,000 veterans. With the help of SPMS students, this was the most wreaths placed in the cemetery.

“My motto is, ‘One wreath at a time, we will honor them all,’” said Jill Harris, a site coordinator for WAA in Crownsville. “With your help, we honored 500 of them.”

Harris gave a presentation to the group of SPMS students about the importance and history behind WAA. The presentation included photos of the wreaths placed on National Wreaths Across America Day and a video of the cemetery.

“Don’t say you’re too young,” Harris said. “One person can make a difference.”

The wreaths will be down until February 2.
